SPM Licensing and Port Counts

Switch Port Management (SPM) functionality can be purchased as a separately licensed product without owning the complete NetMRI package. In this configuration, Switch Port Management is a subset of NetMRI that operates only with L2/L3 switched Ethernet networks and devices.

Switch ports that count against any license are limited to the switch ports present on NetMRI-managed devices.

On devices classified by NetMRI as Switches and Switch-Routers, trunk ports and routed switch ports will not count against the licensed ports count in the Switch Port Management license. Also, some device types don t warrant allocation of SPM license units from NetMRI. Examples include smart hubs and PC clients in the network. The appliance will discover these devices and include them in topologies, but such network devices don t necessarily require frequent change management; thus, simple discovery is sufficient for such devices and licensing is typically not required.

If certain device groups and devices do not appear in Switch Port Management, do the following:

  • 1. Make sure those devices are included in the Switch Port Management license. The quickest method is to begin by clicking Network Explorer.

  • 2. Select the device groups with the switches or switch-routers in question, and click the Discovery tab.

  • 3. Scroll across to view the License Status column. In this column, if a switched device does not show a Switch Port Mgmt entry along with Standard Mgmt or Discovery/Inventory, add it to the Switch Port Management license count.

  • 4. Select the switch devices in the group that are missing from SPM, and click License at the bottom of the table. (Select the checkbox at the top of the column to select the entire group.)

  • 5. In the License Status dialog, choose the Licensed option.

  • 6. Select the Licensed for Switch Port Management checkbox.

  • 7. Click OK. After a few moments, NetMRI begins polling and establishing the devices as part of the Switch Port Management system.
