Configuring Policy Routing

A network administrator uses policy routing to override a device’s default network policy and to route network traffic according to a specific destination, IP address, protocol, interface, and other criteria. Policy routing provides a more granular, flexible method to route traffic, and can be used to implement load balancing, failover, traffic shaping, and security policies in a network. Policy routing is particularly useful in scenarios where the default routing policies of a network device are not sufficient to meet the specific requirements of a network.

Policy routing is usually implemented by configuring a network device to match specific traffic characteristics and to apply routing policies according to those characteristics. This can be done by creating access control lists (ACLs) or route maps that define the traffic classification criteria and the corresponding routing policies.
