Configuring Zone Delegation

A DNS zone delegation is the delegation of the authority over a portion of a DNS namespace to a set of different nameservers. DNS requests made to the delegated zone are serviced by the Authoritative DNS Server to which the zone is delegated.

There are three scenarios for zone delegation:

  • Universal DDI manages both the parent and child zones:

  • Universal DDI manages the parent zone and an external name server manages the delegated zone:


  • An external server manages the parent zone, and the NIOS-X Server manages the child zone:


To view the list of delegated DNS zones, complete the following:

  1. From the Infoblox Portal, click Configure > Networking > DNS.

  2. Click the respective DNS view. 
  3. Drill-down into the primary zone.
  4. The application displays the following information:
    • NAME: The name of the zone.
    • RECORD SOURCE: The delegated zone will be shown as Delegated Zone. 


You can also perform the following in this tab:

  • Click to select the columns to display.

  • Click  > Edit or select the check box for the respective record and click the Edit button to modify a zone.

  • Select a zone to view the details on the right-hand panel. You can view details like name, description, type, tags, status, and the number of DNS servers associated with it. If you do not want to view the details, click .

  • Enter the value that you want to search in the Search text box. The application displays the list of records matching the keyword in the text box.

  • Click  to filter the objects by name, type, and description.

  • Click  > Move to Recycle Bin to move the object to the recycle bin. You can restore the object later or delete it permanently as required. For more information, see Recycle Bin.
