Viewing the Assets Workspace

The Assets workspace is the default landing page when you click Monitor on the left navigation menu on the Infoblox Portal. This workspace displays real-time information about the assets in your network infrastructure.

Business KPI Ribbon

On top of the page, the business KPIs provide weekly insights based on the most recent 7-day period and are updated daily at 00:00 UTC

On top of the page in the business KPI ribbon, you can see statistics about the following assets:

  • Zombie Assets: Displays the total number and the percentage change of zombie assets in your networks. Zombie assets are network devices, including idle public IP addresses, detached storage volume, and idle load balancers, that are vulnerable for or compromised by a hacker via virus, computer worms, or trojan horse programs to perform malicious acts.

  • Unregistered Assets: Displays the total number and the percentage change of unregistered assets in your networks. Unregistered assets are network devices that have missing DNS records or have not been registered as legitimate assets in your network. These assets may not have trusted certificates or fingerprints.

  • Noncompliant Assets: Displays the total number and the percentage change of noncompliant assets in your networks. Non-compliant assets include publicly accessible storage, publicly accessible virtual machines, unsecured storage volume, and permissive security groups.

Summary Monitors

The Infoblox Portal also displays the following summary monitors for additional information related to the supported assets. You can click an active area in the monitors to drill down to the detail view.

  • Assets by Classification: This monitor summarizes the total % of zombie assets that are idle, utilizing resources, or orphan. Click the chart to access the detail view of the assets. This monitor shows the following information (%):

    • Zombie: Shows the following categories as %:

      • Orphan - shows orphan devices. These refer to devices that are connected to a network or infrastructure but are no longer actively managed, monitored, or associated with a specific user, purpose, or administrator. These devices remain in the system, often unnoticed, and can pose various risks and challenges.

      • Idle - shows assets that are idle. These are resources or assets that are underutilized, unused, or not actively contributing to operations, yet they remain provisioned, connected, or available. These assets might still incur costs, consume energy, or pose security risks despite their inactivity.

      • Resource utilization - Resource utilization in the context of cloud computing refers to the extent to which cloud resources, such as compute, storage, memory, and network bandwidth, are actively used relative to their allocated capacity. Effective resource utilization ensures that resources are used efficiently, avoiding waste and optimizing performance and costs.

    • Ghost: shows dangling DNS records. These are DNS entries that point to resources that no longer exist or are no longer active.

    • Noncompliant: shows assets that have public access but are not encrypted.

  • Assets by Type: This monitor summarizes the total registered assets in the networks by type, such as network, server, storage, or workstation. Click the chart to access the detail view of the new assets. This monitor shows the following information (count):

    • Storage

    • Subnet

    • Firewall

    • Address Space

    • Others

  • Assets with Missing Records: This monitor summarizes the total number of assets that have missing DNS records. Click the chart to access the detail view of the assets. In the detail view, you can review information such unregistered assets by category and by location. This monitor shows the following information (count):

    • DNS Pointer Record: A Missing DNS Pointer (PTR) Record occurs when there is no reverse DNS (rDNS) entry to map an IP address to its corresponding domain name. PTR records are essential for performing reverse lookups, which resolve IP addresses into human-readable domain names. Their absence can cause issues in certain services and operations, such as email delivery, security checks, and network diagnostics.

    • DNS Forward Record: Missing DNS Forward Records refer to the absence of necessary DNS records (such as A or AAAA records) that map a domain name to its corresponding IP address. These missing records can cause disruptions in resolving domain names, leading to accessibility and functionality issues for services relying on those domains.

    • IPAM: Missing IPAM Information refers to gaps or incomplete data in an organization's IP Address Management (IPAM) system. IPAM systems are used to plan, track, and manage IP addresses and associated information within a network. Missing information can create inefficiencies, operational challenges, and potential security risks.

  • Noncompliant Assets: This monitor shows the assets that may not be very secure due to their configuration. For example, they may be publicly accessible, have unsecured storage, or have permissive security settings.

  • New Assets by Type: This monitor summarizes the new assets in the networks by type, such as network, server, storage, or workstation. Click the chart to access the detail view of the new assets. This monitor shows the following information for new assets only (count):

    • Storage

    • Subnet

    • Firewall

    • Address Space

    • Others

  • Assets by Location: This monitor shows the assets categorized by location.

Managed and Unmanaged Assets

Universal Asset Insights automatically adds all discovered assets to the Managed category. If you do not want to manage certain assets, you can choose to ‘Unmanage’ them to efficiently utilize your available tokens (licenses). Clicking on any of the Summary Monitors (except Ghost assets) will take you to the Assets (Managed) page.

You can click the menu to toggle between managed or unmanaged assets.

  • To view the managed assets choose ⋮ > Managed Assets.

  • To view the unmanaged assets choose ⋮ > Unmanaged Assets.
