Edit a Serial Number

Once a primary zone is created, you can edit the serial number of an SOA record. The serial number in the SOA record increments every time the record is modified. This serial number plays a key role when and how zone data is updated via zone transfers. Universal DDI allows you to change the serial number (in the SOA record) for the primary server so it is higher than the secondary server, thereby ensuring zone transfers come from the primary server.

Complete the following to edit the serial number:

  1. From the Infoblox Portal, click Configure > Networking > DNS > Zones.

  2. Create a DNS view or click an existing DNS view. For more information about creating a DNS view, see Configuring DNS Views.

  3. On the Zones page you can either create a primary zone or select an existing primary zone. To create a Create and select Primary Zone from the drop-down list.

  4. Select the primary zone and click Edit Serial Number. Choose one of the following options:

    • Increment Serial Number by 1,000: Choose this option to automatically increment the serial number by 1,000.

    • Set Serial Number manually: Specify the serial number manually.

  5. Click Save to save the settings. Click Save & Close to save and close the dialog.
