Creating Templates

Before you create a template, ensure that you understand the following operations when you apply a template to a NIOS-X server:

  • If the server is currently running a service that exists in the template you plan to apply, the service on the server will be updated with new information from the template, including service description, tags, and interface labels. The service name and service type will not be updated.

  • If the server is not currently running a service that exists in the template, all configurations for that service in the template will be created and added to the server.

  • If the server is currently running a service that does not exist in the template, the service will be removed from the server when you apply the template.

  • After applying a template to a server or multiple servers, you can set the lock type on specific servers to address various situations. For information, see Setting Lock Type on servers.

To create a template, do the following:

  1. Log in to the Infoblox Portal.

  2. Click the Configure > Servers tab.

  3. Select the server from which you want to create a template, and then click the … icon > Create Template.

  4. In the Create Template dialog, specify the following:

    • Name: Enter a name for the template.

    • Description: Enter a description for the template.

    • TAGS: Click Add and specify the following to associate a key with the template:

      • KEY: Enter a meaningful name for the key, such as a location or a department.

      • VALUE: Enter a value for the key. For details, see Managing Tags.

    • Template from Server: This displays the name of the server from which the Infoblox platform is taking a snapshot of the service configurations.

    • Services: The following is displayed for each of the services captured in the template. You cannot make changes to the following information.

      • Service Name: The format of the service name: <server_name>_<service_type>. When you apply the template to a server, the <server_name> will display the name of the server to which you have applied the template.

      • Service Type: The service type, such as cdc (for the Cloud Data Connector service) or dns (for the DNS service).

      • Interface Bindings: The interface labels you have configured for the corresponding interface binding with the service.

  5. Click Save & Close.

The template is now created. You can view the template in the Configure > Service Deployment > Protocol Service Templates page and apply it to applicable servers. For information, see Configuring Templates.
